Beginning of the entry will be in Bahasa Malaysia, but the rest will be written in English.
Aha!)

"I love whale" is going to be about Rattan Crafts in this entry. Frankly, when speaking about Rattan Crafts, most typical Malaysians will have this absolute image of oldfolks(women) in "Kampung" weaving rattan. I dont blame such image, since rattan craft is pretty much a cottage industry. Few craftpersons have gone beyond the typical @ expected idea of what rattan craft is all about. Some people think that the things we do here in Institut Kraf Negara are easy and dont require any special knowledge. In addition, there are people who also think these jobs are mainly for the lesser gender, mainly girls. Oh no! no! no! be them boys or girls, they need to be strong and will-power driven in order to do Rattan Crafts.
So, i am going to brief how we do things here in Institut Kraf Negara. There are few processes that students usually go through when making a product.
SKETCHING - It starts of with a point, that can be of a theme, subject or an inspiration. Basically, your product ideas can derive from tangible and intangible matter. Sketching requires a whole lot of dedication. Pages and pages of drawings are done to find what will go into your product based on certain guidelines. Students need to be creative, and critical at the same time. Here in IKN, we exercise two types of sketching, the Napkin and Informative Style. Enjoy the sketches : )

WORKING DRAWING - After refining all the aspects of the design, next is the working drawing. Basically, these are drawings of parts and pieces of your products - how much, materials, techniques used and so on. It also gives me a clear idea of the product construction, thus, easier for me to pin point a problem should i see one.

PRELIMINARY WORKS - These would involve preparing materials required for main works. Setting up your templates, moulds, bendings are based on processes required for your product. Below is transfering the whale templates into pieces of structures.

PRODUCT CREATION - I think you ll get the generally idea. This is the stage where the student will work like mad hoping to get an A in my class. Aha! It is also a stage which i normally come and see their progresses, and make their life even more misreable.

THE FINALE - Well, here it is. Finally, two main points are given priority, the INDAH (rattan beauty) dan MAKNA(conceptually aesthetic) at the end of the day. INDAH would be the materials, techniques, time, and finishing used, while MAKNA is more on the design aspects. Students need to pass the INDAH stage before proceeding to MAKNA.
I hope, the short brief will give you some idea how we do things here at Institut Kraf Negara. I hope i wont be lazy to post more pics or rattan products in the future. In the meantime, Happy Blogging and Have a great day every day ya.Congrats!! to these first three commentators : )

Till next time.
